Breathe Easy My Journey to Calm Through Breath Awareness and Yoga

Updated: May 25

In a world that often feels overwhelming, finding peace can seem elusive. I was caught in the whirlwind of daily stress when I embarked on a quest for serenity. It became clear that developing a deeper relationship with my breath was essential for regaining calm. As my yoga practice evolved, breath awareness transformed from a simple technique to a vital part of my everyday life.

Discovering Breath Awareness

Breath awareness is simply focusing on your breathing and appreciating the sensations that arise with it. Initially, I believed it was just about taking deeper breaths, but it turned out to be much more profound.

My first yoga class, which, by chance, was a kundalini yoga class was almost thirty years ago. It was years before I began to recognize the power of the breath. I was much more focused on the postures and movement. Gradually, over the years, my practice evolved, became more refined, my focus shifted from the physical aspect of yoga, to the more subtle aspects, such as meditation and breathwork.

I learned how different breathing rhythms could dramatically alter my mental state. For instance, a slow, deep breath would ground me, while rapid, shallow breaths often signaled anxiety creeping in. This awareness has been a game-changer in managing my emotions. With this newfound control over my breath, I felt equipped to handle stressful situations more gracefully, knowing I could find calmness through conscious breathing.

Types of Breath Work

Through yoga practice and teacher training I learned a variety of breathing practices and experienced their benefits. For example, Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) helps me feel more balanced and serene. Whereas, Breath of Joy, uplifts my mood and feels invigorating.

Ultimately, my favorite practice is simple Breath Awareness. It feels like orchestrating a dance between my body and breath. To practice I just meet my breath right where it is; I tune into the natural rhythm of my breath and follow it, just the way it is. It may be jagged or shallow, but I meet it anyway, with acceptance and compassion, knowing and trusting if I stay present with it, it will naturally come into regulation, and a feeling of peace and calm will ensue.

Breath Awareness to Feel Calm Throughout the Day

The beauty of this practice is that it can be used anywhere, it is always accessible. It can be practiced throughout daily life. I incorporate mindful breathing in various situations, from sitting at my desk to waiting in line at the grocery store.

The process of feeling my body breath redirects my attention from stressors to my breath. With consistent practice, I learned to respond thoughtfully to my anxious feelings instead of reacting impulsively.

A Tool for Emotional Regulation

I have found breathing to be an effective tool for emotional regulation. Research has shown that mindful breathing can lower cortisol levels, promoting relaxation.
