What Is EMDR Therapy — And How It Can Help You Heal

If you’ve been carrying the weight of old memories, anxiety, or trauma in your body and mind, you may have heard about EMDR therapy and wondered what it really is — and whether it might help you feel more like yourself again.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a gentle, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process past experiences that may still be impacting you today — emotionally, physically, and relationally.

Rather than asking you to retell your story over and over again, EMDR works with your brain’s natural healing ability. When something overwhelming happens and the nervous system doesn’t have the support, safety, or space to fully process it, the memory can become “stuck.” EMDR helps those stuck experiences begin to move again — so your body no longer has to stay braced, anxious, or hyper-alert.

EMDR supports healing with:

  • Trauma — big or small

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Childhood emotional wounds

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship patterns

  • Stress and burnout

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or your body

Many clients describe EMDR as finally being able to breathe more fully, soften internally, and feel safer inside their own skin.

What Happens in an EMDR Session?

Safety and grounding come first. We begin by helping your nervous system feel supported and resourced. You don’t have to dive into anything before you’re ready.

Then, using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or gentle tapping), we work together with a memory, sensation, or belief that still feels charged. As your brain processes the experience, people often find that the emotional intensity lowers — and new understandings, compassion, and clarity naturally arise.

You remain fully in control throughout the process.

How I Support Clients as a Connecticut-Based EMDR Therapist

As a psychotherapist and Connecticut-based EMDR therapist, I bring a trauma-informed, compassionate, and embodied approach to this work. Whether I’m supporting clients online or in person, my intention is always to create a space that feels safe, warm, and deeply respectful of your pace and your story.

I often work with women who have spent years taking care of others — while quietly carrying their own pain, worry, or exhaustion. EMDR offers a pathway home — to your inner wisdom, your breath, and your innate strength.

This work is not about “fixing” you.It is about helping your system release what doesn’t belong to you anymore — so more ease, openness, and self-trust can emerge.

Why EMDR Is So Powerful

EMDR works directly with the nervous system, where trauma is stored. Instead of just talking about what happened, the healing occurs at a deeper level — where your body can finally relax out of old protective responses such as:

  • Hypervigilance

  • Emotional numbness

  • Self-doubt

  • Anxiety

  • Overwhelm

Clients often share that they feel lighter, clearer, and more grounded — and that they respond differently to situations that once felt triggering.
